Run Line Commands


This is an article that lists various commands that can be started on the "run" line in a Windows environment. These commands perform various functions from opening programs that users cannot find icons for to starting various system scans.


  • calc - opens Calculator program.


  • chkdsk - starts the Check Disk utility which checks the disk surface, checks the integrity of files and folders and looks for lost clusters (among other things). Good to run if OS is operating slow or buggy.


  • cleanmgr - opens the Disk Cleanup program.


  • cmd - opens the Command Line or MS-DOS window.


  • control.exe - opens the Control Panel.


  • devmgmt.msc - opens the Device Manager.


  • dfrg.msc - opens the Disk Defragmenter.


  • iexplore - opens Internet Explorer to its homepage, even if the user cannot find an icon anywhere for it this will start the program. You can also use the format of "iexplore www.domain.tld" and go directly to a website or IP using Internet Explorer.


  • ftp - opens the FTP utility on windows, good for checking ftp connectivity. Use format "open hostname" to connect to a remote server.


  • msimn - opens Outlook Express (or Windows Mail on Vista) to the start screen.


  • mspaint - opens Microsoft Paint to a new paint document.


  • narrator.exe - opens the Narrator program that has computer voice read off what is on the screen for the visually impaired.


  • ncpa.cpl - opens the Network Connections window.


  • notepad - opens Notepad to a blank document.


  • regedit - opens the Registry Editor to modify registry entries on the OS. WARNING - this only for advanced users who understand the registry files, deleting or modifying the wrong entries can cause users to lose valuable data and even have to completely reformat their computer.


  • sfc /scannow - starts scan of protected Windows system files. WARNING this may require the Windows OS CD to check certain system .dll files. If the user does not have the CD have them skip these files in order to check others.


  • sysdm.cpl - opens the System Properties window of the OS. This contains various network and hardware utilities.


  • telephon.cpl - opens Phone and Modem Options window.


  • winver - opens a screen that will show the version of Windows on the computer.
