Example of a typical DNS record

The following is an example of a typical DNS record for a Metro Provider customer. Please note that this a typical example and that other more involved domains can have records that have a lot more entries.

; dbraun99.com
@ SOA ns.infinetivity.com. hostmaster.infinetivity.com. (
                2008041003 ; serial
                1d ; refresh
                1h ; retry
                1w ; expire
                8h ) ; minimum ttl

; dbraun99.com
                IN NS 0.ns.orbis.net.
                IN NS 1.ns.orbis.net.
                IN NS 2.ns.orbis.net.
                IN NS 3.ns.orbis.net.

                IN MX 10 dc1util01.unpluggedcities.com.
                IN MX 10 dc1util02.unpluggedcities.com.
                IN MX 10 dc1util03.unpluggedcities.com.
                IN A 209.173.229.132
www IN CNAME @
ftp IN CNAME @
mail IN CNAME imap.unpluggedcities.com.

  • Anything that has a semi colon (;) in front of it is effectively commented out of the record. What this means is that it is there for explanatory purposes only and is not required.

  • The at sign (@) simply means that the value from the previous line is used in that line also. Basically a ditto for DNS records.
